Khoya Khoya Chaand Khula Aasmaan...

I really enjoy rewatching my favorite films because that's when I get to pay attention to those little details that I probably missed while watching them the previous times.

Do you remember that scene in Dilwaale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (at 6:26 min) when super upset Baauji (Amrish Puri) arrives at home from store after just having dealt with beer-guzzling Raj (SRK)? Simran (Kajol) wants to go on a tour of Europe, so to set the right mood, she promptly switches the song from random hulla-gulla type song (which probably is another HFM oldie) to gham diye mustakil.

Similarly, in Jab We Met when Aditya (Shahid) and Geet (Kareena) arrive at Hotel Decent, there is a moment when some random song plays in the background. The music of it is so cool it just makes you feel happy. I kept wondering and recalling random songs for almost an hour to find out which one this was until Papu came by. As soon as I had him listen to it, he said it!! and indeed this was it!!

I think there's one more song like this. It is during the scene in film Hulchul (Kareena starrer) when Kishanbhaiya (Paresh Raval) arrives at his village on a bus to see his wife Gopi (Farah). He gets off the bus near this paan ki dukaan/stall and the song is playing in the background right at that moment. I definitely know it's a Mohd Rafi song.. need to go back and watch the scene again to remember what song that is... that song tomorrow, if I don't already have it on here. :)

Any ways, for this one, I find it hilarious that Dev Anand sahab had to move his hands such funny way to make it work. I love the song nevertheless, mostly for the music and lyrics and Rafi sahab's voice. And also for the fact that it has fooooooooooourrrr lovely stanzas and how the third one starts off on a completely different tune than rest of them. Enjoy!

ho ho ho ho
(khoya khoya chaand khula aasmaan
aankhon mein saari raat jaayegi
tum ko bhi kaise neend aayegi ho ho) (2)
khoya khoya chaand

(this music plays at the beginning of scene at Hotel Decent in Jab We Met)

masti bhari hawaa jo chali (2)
khil-khil gayi yeh dil ki kali
man ki gali main hai khalbhali
ke unko to bulaao
ho ho ho... ho ho
khoya khoya chaand khula aasmaan
aankhon mein saari raat jaayegi
tum ko bhi kaise neend aayegi ho ho
khoya khoya chaand

taare chale nazaare chale (2)
sang sang mere woh saare chale
chaaron taraf ishaare chale
kisi ke to ho jaao
ho ho ho... ho ho
khoya khoya chaand khula aasmaan
aankhon mein saari raat jaayegi
tum ko bhi kaise neend aayegi ho ho
khoya khoya chaand

ho.. ho ho ho (2)

aisi hi raat bheegi si raat (2)
haathon mein haath hote woh saath
keh lete unse dil ki yeh baat
ab to na sataao
ho ho ho... ho ho
khoya khoya chaand khula aasmaan
aankhon mein saari raat jaayegi
tum ko bhi kaise neend aayegi ho ho
khoya khoya chaand

hum mit chale jinke liye
hum mit chale hai jinke liye
bin kuchh kahe woh chup chup rahe
koyi zaraa yeh unse kahe
na aise aazmaao
ho ho ho... ho ho
khoya khoya chaand khula aasmaan
aankhon mein saari raat jaayegi
tum ko bhi kaise neend aayegi ho ho
khoya khoya chaand (6)

Duniya banaane waale... pyaar ki aag mein...

While listening to the songs of film Ziddi, I discovered so many songs that I had missed out on watching the film years ago. This being one of them. It sounds and looks comedy, but has very deep feelings about a broken hearted person. Mannada gives voice to Mehmood once again to create this magical number. I still can't believe I missed this song.

At about 3:30 mins in the song, you hear the famous music that has been played in many many songs like nazare mili dil dhadaka, dole dole dil dole bole dil bole, and of course from Come September, and many more.

duniya banaane waale sun se meri kahaani
roye meri mohabbat
tapde (2) meri jawaani

pyaar ki aag mein tan badan jal gayaa (2)
jaane phir kyon jalaati hai duniya mujhe (2)
pyaar ki aag mein tan badan jal gayaa

main to rotaa phiru baadalon ki tarhaa
thandi aahen bharu paagalon ki tarhaa
main to rotaa phiru baadalon ki tarhaa
arre main to ho ho ho rotaa phiru
main to rotaa phiru baadalon ki tarhaa
thandi aahen bharu paagalon ki tarhaa
jaane phir kyon, phir kyon
jaane phir kyon rulaati hai duniya mujhe
pyaar ki aag mein tan badan jal gayaa (2)

baat jab main karoon mooh se nikle dhuaa
jal gayaa (2) mere dil kaa jahaan
baat jab main karoon mooh se nikle dhuaa (2)
arre jal gayaa
jal gayaa mere dil ka jahaan
jaane phir kyon, phir kyon
jaane phir kyon sataati hai duniya mujhe
pyaar ki aag mein tan badan jal gayaa (2)

ishq mujhko nachaataa rahaa hai sadaa
kyaa kyaa sapne dikhaata rahaa hai sadaa
ishq mujhko nachaataa rahaa hai sadaa (2)
kyaa kyaa sapne dikhaata rahaa hai sadaa
jaane phir kyon, phir kyon
jaane phir kyon nachaati hai duniya mujhe
pyaar ki aag mein tan badan jal gayaa (2)
tan badan jal gaya (2)

Yeh meri zindagi ek paagal hawaa

What an upbeat number! but a sad one at that. I couldn't believe my ears when I first listened to it. Completely contradicting music and lyrics, it's a very beautiful song though, with Lataji's lovely voice and Asha Parekh's dancing/acting just add to the beauty. The song just gets stuck in your head after listening to it for a few times.

yeh kaun jaane main kya hoon
sun na chaahte ho
suno
main ek chaand hoon
jis ke maathe pe ek daag hai
mera dil jalta hua chiraag hai

(yeh meri zindagi ek paagal hawaa
aaj idhar kal udhar main kisi ki nahin) (2)
yeh meri zindagi

jeevan meraa jyoti pyaar ki
har dil se mel chaahat ka khel
duniya se pyaar karti
meri mehfil sab ki raahen
chalne mein teer itni shaheer
jaise gagan ki laali
aaj idhar kal udhar main kisi ki nahin
yeh meri zindagi ek paagal hawaa
aaj idhar kal udhar main kisi ki nahin
yeh meri zindagi

meri duniya dhokhe suhaane
waade haseen kaagaz ke phool
khusboo se door hai
hoon to saahil lekin toofaan
manzil na koyi mere khayaal
masti mein choor hai
aaj idhar kal udhar main kisi ki nahin
yeh meri zindagi ek paagal hawaa
aaj idhar kal udhar main kisi ki nahin
yeh meri zindagi

mera yeh dil zakhmon ka gulshan
aahen bharu na shikve karu
main aansoo ke jaam pee loon
gham ko bhulaau khush ho ke gaau
machle jo dard chehra ho zard
deewaani ban ke jee loon
aaj idhar kal udhar main kisi ki nahin
(yeh meri zindagi ek paagal hawaa
aaj idhar kal udhar main kisi ki nahin) (2)
yeh meri zindagi

Saiyaan Dil Mein Aana Re

The tunes of this song have been my favorite ringtone ever since I can remember... and I finally remembered to watch it. :) Wow! and what a beautiful voice of Shamshad Begum and Vyjayantimala looks so cute and adorable. Love her costumes and just about everything about her in this one. Catchy beat makes me love it even more and lyrics are playful too!

saiyaan dil mein aana re
aa ke phir na jaana re
oh aa ke phir na jaana re
chham chhamaa chham chham

raaja ban ke aana re
mohe le jaana re
ho mohe le ke jaana re
chham chhamaa chham chham

chaandani raat hogi taaron ki baraat hogi (2)
pehle pehle pyaar ki pehli pehli baat hogi (2)
khushi khushi gaayenge hum geet suhaana re
saiyaan dil mein aana re
aa ke phir na jaana re
ho aa ke phir na jaana re
chham chhamaa chham chham

thodi thodi sahel hogi thoda thoda pyaar hoga (2)
kabhi iqraar hoga kabhi inkaar hoga (2)
tera manaana mera rooth jaana re
saiyaan dil mein aana re
aa ke phir na jaana re
ho aa ke phir na jaana re
chham chhamaa chham chham

tum mere paas hoge gham badi door hoga (2)
kehta hai jiya mera hoga zuroor hoga (2)
laana re laana tashreef laana re
saiyaan dil mein aana re
aa ke phir na jaana re
o aa ke phir na jaana re
chham chhamaa chham chham

raaja ban ke aana re
mohe le jaana re
ho mohe le ke jaana re
chham chhamaa chham chham

Jaane Woh Kaise Log The...

The first time I had heard this song was when I was a kid. Mom used to hum these classics so often then that I just thought that these were actually songs of hers and not movie songs. Later on when I learnt what movies were, I realized these were actually immortal songs made by some crazily creative folks. Reading about it and listening to it on Anaamica's blog made me realize once again what a beautiful song it actually is. I just had to post it. Mindblowing lyrics!

jaane woh kaise log the jinke pyaar ko pyaar milaa
humne to jab kaliyaan maangi kaanton kaa haar milaa
jaane woh kaise log the jinke pyaar ko pyaar milaa

khushiyon ki manzil dhoondhi to gham ki gard mili (2)
chaahat ke naghame chaahe to aanhen sard mili
dil ke bojh ko dhundhalaa kar gayaa jo ghamkhaar milaa
humne to jab kaliyaan maangi kaanton kaa haar milaa
jaane woh kaise log the jinke pyaar ko pyaar milaa

bichhad gayaa (2)
bichhad gayaa har saathi de kar pal do pal kaa saath
kis ko fursat hai jo thaame deewaanon kaa haath
hum ko apnaa saayaa tak aksar bezaar milaa
humne to jab kaliyaan maangi kaanton kaa haar milaa
jaane woh kaise log the jinke pyaar ko pyaar milaa

isko hi jeenaa kehte hai to yoon hi jee lenge (2)
uff na karenge lab see lenge aansoo pee lenge
gham se ab ghabaraanaa kaisaa gham sau baar milaa
humne to jab kaliyaan maangi kaanton kaa haar milaa
jaane woh kaise log the jinke pyaar ko pyaar milaa

Aise to na dekho...

I like very few songs of Dev Anand and this is one of them. Rafi sahab's voice can be the most playful and entice you. He's done a fantastic job in this one, I adore this one. Burmandada's music touches your heart, and Majrooh Sultanpuri's lyrics are penned so beautifully, they describe the feelings of how someone's eyes can intoxicate you.

aise to na dekho ke hum ko nasha ho jaaye
aise to na dekho
khubsoorat si koyi hum se khataa ho jaaye (2)
aise to na dekho

tum hume roko phir bhi hum naa ruke
tum kaho kaafir phir bhi aise jhuke
qadam-e-naaz pe ek sajdaa adaa ho jaaye
aise to na dekho

yoon na ho aankhen rahe kaajal ghole
badh ke bekhudi hanseen gesu khole
khul ke phir zulfen siyaah kaali balaa ho jaaye
aise to na dekho

hum to masti mein jaane kyaa kyaa kahe
lab-e-naazuk se aisa na ho tumhe
beqaraari kaa gilaa hum se sivaa ho jaaye

aise to na dekho ke hum ko nasha ho jaaye
khubsoorat si koyi hum se kataa ho jaaye
aise to na dekho...

Khilte Hai Gul Yahaan

Been listening to this since a few weeks actually, for of course no one else but Shashi Kapoor and actually I like Kishore Kumar's singing too and while I was at it I realized even the Lata version is beautiful, but for now we only talk about this one because it has Shashi Kapoor.

Notice SK at/in the following scenes: the humming at the beginning of the song, the way he removes the flower from her hair, the way he smiles and blinks his dreamy eyes while doing so, those mile-wide lips, yet again the smile, how his face glows in the light of fire, the way he serves the tea (as if it were cups full of love aah! pure heaven) *drool* the eyelashes and the smile and *DROOL* I need a bib; oh did I mention the smile? yup, that is to die for.

  • the way he turns his hand at 1:34
  • at 1:43 fat girl with blue jacket is so blinded by him she starts drinking tea with both hands, but then again, who wouldn't!? :P
  • watch him from 2:08 to 2:23
  • then again from 2:39 to 2:45
  • and at 2:54 (damn!)
  • and boy! from 3:05 to 4:05 for like whole minute the camera doesn't move away from HIS face (sheer bliss). Awwwww my knees have melted and disappeared somewhere by now.

Once you come back to reality, here are the lyrics:

    hm hm hm hm

khilte hai gul yahaan khil ke bikharne ko (2)
milte hai dil yahaan mil ke bichhadne ko
    khilte hai gul yahaan

(kal rahe naa rahe mausam yeh pyaar kaa
kal ruke naa ruke dolaa bahaar kaa) (2)
chaar pal mile jo aaj pyaar mein guzaar de
khilte hai gul yahaan khil ke bikharne ko
    khilte hai gul yahaan

ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho aa

(jheelon ke hothon par meghon kaa raag hai
phoolon ke seene mein thandi thandi aag hai) (2)
dil ke aaine mein yen tu samaa utaar le
khilte hai gul yahaan khil ke bikharne ko
    khilte hai gul yahaan

(pyaasaa hai dil sanam pyaasi yeh raat hai
hothon mein dabi dabi koi meethi baat hai) (2)
in lamho pe aaj tu har khushi nisaar de
khilte hai gul yahaan khil ke bikharne ko
milte hai dil yahaan mil ke bichhadne ko
    khilte hai gul yahaan

    F:
aa aa aa aa aa aa ho ho ho ho

khilte hai gul yahaan khil ke bikharne ko
milte hai dil yahaan mil ke bichhadne ko
khilte hai gul yahaan khil ke bikharne ko
    khilte hai gul yahaan

(kal rahe naa rahe mausam yeh pyaar kaa
kal ruke naa ruke dolaa bahaar kaa) (2)
chaar pal mile jo aaj pyaar mein guzaar de
khilte hai gul yahaan khil ke bikharne ko
milte hai dil yahaan mil ke bichhadne ko
    khilte hai

ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho aa

    ho jheelon ke hothon par
jheelon ke hothon par meghon kaa raag hai
phoolon ke seene mein thandi thandi aag hai
dil ke aaine mein yen tu samaa utaar le
khilte hai gul yahaan khil ke bikharne ko
milte hai dil yahaan mil ke bichhadne ko
    khilte hai gul yahaan

(pyaasaa hai dil sanam pyaasi yeh raat hai
hothon mein dabi dabi koi meethi baat hai) (2)
in lamho pe aaj tu har khushi nisaar de

    Tere Bin Soone

If not the actual song itself, you've probably heard the beginning aalap of this song in a Lata Mangeshkar interview somewhere.

I didn't know of this song until recently but as soon as I did, I almost fell in love with the music and the slowness of it. Ashok Kumar looks almost different in that getup, and Asha Parekh as beautiful as ever. Music is quite slow and touches your heart. The singers have seemingly poured out their heart with their words. Do check it out. The video has an extra stanza than my audio track so I loved watching it as well.

Don't know what raag this is based on but I am almost certain it is based on one.

    M: tere bin soone (2)
    nain humaare
    tere bin soone
baat takat gaye saanj sakhaare haaye
    tere bin soone nain humaare
    tere bin soone

    ho
raat jo aaye dhal jaaye pyaasi (2)
din kaa hai dujaa naam udaasi
    neendiyaan naa aaye (2)
    ab mere dwaare
    tere bin soone nain humaare
    tere bin soone

    ho
jag mein rahaa main jag se paraayaa (2)
saayaa bhi meraa mere paas na aayaa
    hansne ke din bhi (2)
    ro ke guzaare
    tere bin soone nain humaare
    tere bin soone
baat takat gaye saanj sakhaare haaye
    tere bin soone

    F: hmm hmm hmm
    ho ho ho
    oh andekhe oh anjaane (2)
chhup ke naa gaa yeh prem taraane
    kaun hai tu mohe (2)
    kuchh to bataa re
    tere bin soone nayan humaare
    tere bin soone
    baat takat gaye saanj sakhaare
    tere bin soone

    Aan Milo Shyaam Saanware

It wasn't until Pinku asked me for this song that I got to hear this beautiful song. The lyrics are so beautiful and it's sung so wonderfully by Geeta Dutt and Manna Dey. I don't think this is an often heard song of film Devdas. A really special one for the devotees of Shri Radha-Krishna.

G: aan milo aan milo shyaam saanware aan milo
aan milo aan milo shyaam saanware
brij mein akeli raadhe khoyi khoyi si re
M: radhe khoyi khoyi si re oh kanha aan milo
    G: ho
Both: aan milo aan milo shyaam saanware aan milo

G: brindaavan ki galiyan mein tum bin jiyara na laage
    M: ho jiyara na laage
G: nis din tumari baaT nihaare vyakul nain abhaage
    M: vyakul nain abhaage
G: ab hi aisi dasha hai man ki ka hui hai phir aage re
brij mein akeli raadhe khoyi khoyi si re
M: radhe khoyi khoyi si re oh kanha aan milo
    G: ho
Both: aan milo aan milo shyaam saanware aan milo

G: aaj na kaahe jamna teere murli madhur bajaai
    M: ho murli madhur bajaai
aaj na kaahe sakhiyan ke sang hilmil raas rachaai
    M: hilmil raas rachaai
humra aangan chhod ke tohe kaun nagariya bhaayi re
brij mein akeli raadhe khoyi khoyi si re
M: radhe khoyi khoyi si re oh kanha aan milo
    G: ho
Both: aan milo aan milo shyaam saanware aan milo

G: ajhun jo na bheje mohan taine koyi khabariya
    M: ho ho ho
G: ho ajhun jo na bheje mohan taine koyi khabariya
    ho taine koi khabariya
ho jayi hai is brij ki bala ro ro kar bawariya
M: ho ro ro kar bawariya
G: dheer bandha ja dheer bandha ja
    mukh dikhlaja nat-naagar saanwariya re
brij mein akeli raadhe khoyi khoyi si re
M: radhe khoyi khoyi si re oh kanha aan milo
    G: ho

Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam

I had heard this song very first time at a musical party that we used to have with family and friends. I was probably in 8th standard at the time. I remember I had fallen in love with the song and tried very hard to remember it after the function but some how I couldn't recall the lyrics. Later on, when I had access to mp3 songs, this was one of the gems I found and couldn't stop listening to it. Later on, I also rented the movie to watch the story line but never could finish it. I still need to complete watching the movie but the song is truly an amazing one! All about this song is best! The voice of singer, the lyrics, the music, the actors... the list continues! When you're listening to it, you are taken to another dimension...
