MukhDaa ni maaya laagi re.. Mohan pyaara.. (Gujarati)

Last week on my usual business trip to PA, I ran into Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. It was a very pleasant surprise for me and meeting him and his sons just made my trip so much more exciting than it usually is. They personally invited me to attend their concert that was happening at the Bharatiya temple there as part of a 10-day Shri Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Fortunately, despite parking being a challenge and lot of people not getting entry to the concert, I made it to the temple and to the concert both and felt utterly blessed to have attended the concert and the temple visit was simply divine! First time ever I felt this unique feeling of being in a temple and being engrossed in the aarti and it reminded me of aarti they do at Mata Na Madh in Kutch, Gujarat. It was truly an out-of-this-world experience! Any how, the concert was also very beautiful and it was great to listen to the magical sarod played by the maestro and his young boys. Both Amaan and Ayaan play amazing sarod as well and it was a treat to listen to them. All three of them took turns playing for almost three hours accompanied by Vineet Vyas on the tabla. It was a treat!! One of the pieces was so amazing I absolutely loved it. Too bad I forget the name of the raag it was based on but it kept on bringing me back to this song that I'm posting today. It was funny how my mind was playing tricks on me. I was so mesmerized by both the sarod's version of this raag and this song, which I am almost certain is based on the same raag, I had to post the song. It's a beautiful Gujarati bhajan by Meerabai about how she is fascinated by Shri Krishna's beautiful face and what it has done to her. You have to listen to it to enjoy it! The flute, tabla, manjira, and other instruments make it even more beautiful along with the beautiful voice of singer, Dipali Saumaiya.

Anondo loke, mongola loke, birajo, sotto sundaro (Bangla)

Back on June 30th, bay area had celebrations of Gujarat Day 2013. About 10 or so professional singers of bay area participated in the musical morning function that involved presentation of Rabindra Sangeet. What was extraordinary about this presentation was that the songs were not in Bangla/Bengali but in Gujarati! :) That made it so much more fun to listen to as the lyrics made sense. Not just to me but almost entire audience, which I'm kind of disappointed to say consisted of mainly folks in their late 30s and above. I wish generations passed on their Gujarati language knowledge to next generations. That'd be a topic for another day. Back to Gujarat Day musical function. It was amazing to realize the quality of lyrics and the music that goes with it. The singers kept everything the same, except for the lyrics. Here translation experts kicked in and shared their talent of translating the original Bangla lyrics to Gujarati and boy! did they do justice to it or what!! It blows my mind when I read those lyrics again. Here's my favorite song from the collection, which I think is a prayer. Absolutely beautiful to listen to and totally goosebumpy. It spreads peace around and within.

Original Bangla Lyrics:

anondo loke, mongola loke birajo sotto sundaro

mohima tabo udbhasito maha gagon majhe
bisso jagato moni bhushan besTito charane
anondo loke, mongola loke birajo sotto sundaro

groho taroko chondro tapono byakulo druto bege
koriche pan, koriche snan, akkhayo kirane
anondo loke, mongola loke birajo sotto sundaro

dharon par jhare nirjhar, mohon modhu shobha
phul pallab gito gandho sundaro barane
anondo loke, mongola loke birajo sotto sundaro

bahe jiban rajonidin chiro nutan dhara
koruna tabo abishram janame marane
anondo loke, mongola loke birajo sotto sundaro

sneho prem daya bhokti komol kare pran
kato santan karo barshan santap harane
anondo loke, mongola loke birajo sotto sundaro

jagote tabo ki mahotsabh, bandan kare bisso
shri sampad bhumaspado nirbhoy sharone
anondo loke, mongola loke birajo sotto sundaro

Gujarati Translated Lyrics:

Saagar ni chaadar... (Gujarati)

When we were kids mom used to sing this lullaby (haalaraDu) to us all the time. After growing up I found out that we weren't the only ones or even the first ones she sang this to. Atulmama, along with all other older cousins also got to hear the same song from her when they were kids. So when Sejalben found the audio clip of the song, she couldn't help but feel nostalgic about it and shared it, passing on the nostalgia to me and reminding me of this beautiful song after years. What awesome lyrics and music!! Best part is that the song is sung in the same sur/raag as the original one I have heard growing up. The lullaby was further personalized by singing the baby's name in place of "sooraj" when it was being sung and to whom it was being sung to. Some songs have special places in heart, this being one of them. :)

(kheele chhe jui tyaare tene gamatu re andhaare ey ey

shambhu charaNe paDi, maangu ghaDi re ghaDi (Gujarati)

Yesterday, while listening to gham diye mushtaqil..., I kept on coming back to this one. That's when I realized that both songs are based on same raag Asaawari and that's what was leading me to this one again and again.

Since last week I've been looking for something related to Shivji since it was Maha Shiv Ratri and finally I found it! :)

This bhajan gives me goosebumps.

Jai Bhole Nath!

Mehndi te vaavi maalave (Gujarati)

All these Rajendra Kumar talks on the Drift reminded me of the only Gujarati movie he worked in. It's Mehndi Rang Lagyo. It's almost believable he's a Gujarati the way he acts in the film and of course in the songs. Same with Usha Kiran. The way she carries off a cotton saari just makes her look more Gujarati than she already does.

There are two duets of Rafi sahab and Lata ji in this film. One being nain chakchur chhe and the other is this one.

This song, too, has two versions - one is a garbo and this one being the romantic duet. Enjoy!

F: mehndi te vaavi maaLave eno rang gayo gujaraat re
mehndi rang laagyo re

M: mehndi te vaavi maaLave eno rang gayo gujaraat re
mehndi rang laagyo re

F: ho mehndi muki me to rangeeli bhaat ni
M: maaLavaano mor ne dhel gujaraat ni

F: ho mehndi muki me to rangeeli bhaat ni
M: maaLavaano mor ne dhel gujaraat ni
F: maLyo mane man no maangyo
ke rang mane laagyo (2)
ke mehndi rang laagyo re
Both: mehndi te vaavi maaLave ne eno rang gayo gujaraat re
mehndi rang laagyo re

F: maaraa chhaayal no rang maari paayal no rang
maaraa kaajal no rang maara kanku no rang
mehndi na rang maa chhupyo anant? (2)
M: taari aankhyo no jhok? mane vaagyo
ke rang mane laagyo (2)
F: ke mehndi rang laagyo re
Both: mehndi te vaavi maaLave ne eno rang gayo gujaraat re
mehndi rang laagyo re

M: (ho koni te mehndi no rang tane laage
poonam gagan maa ne man maa vaage) (2)
F: maare ??? thodo rang jaagyo
ke rang mane laagyo (2)
F: ke mehndi rang laagyo re
Both: (mehndi te vaavi maaLave ne eno rang gayo gujaraat re
mehndi rang laagyo re) (2)
