Chhod Kar Tere Pyaar Ka Daaman

Aah, it's been ages since I listened to songs like these... what a fun fun song. Helen looks gorgeous and what beautiful voices. Lyrics and music are totally out of this world!!! It's the kind of song that you hum all day and still want to keep humming....

M: chhod kar tere pyaar ka daaman (2)
yeh bataa de ke hum kidhar jaayen
F: hum ko dar hai ke teri baahon mein (2)
hum khushi se na aaj mar jaaye

F: mil gaye aaj qaafile dil ke
hum khade hai qareeb manzil ke
muskura kar jo tum ne dekh liye
mit gaye hans ke sab gile dil ke
M: kitni pyaari hai yeh haseen ghadiyaan
in se keh do yahin thaher jaaye
F: hum ko dar hai ke teri baahon mein
hum khushi se na aaj mar jaaye

M: tere qadamon pe zindagi rakh doon
apni aankhon ki roshani rakh doon
tu agar khush ho main tere dil mein
apne dil ki har ik khushi rakh doon
F: mere humdam meri khushi yeh hai
tu nazar aaye hum jidhar jaaye
M: chhod kar tere pyaar ka daaman
yeh bataa de ke hum kidhar jaayen

F: dekh kar pyaar in nigaahon mein
deep se jal gaye hai raahon mein
tum se milte na hum to yeh duniya
doob jaati hamaari aanhon mein
M: apni aahon se aaj yeh keh do
ab na hothon pe umr bhar aaye
chhod kar tere pyaar ka daaman
yeh bataa de ke hum kidhar jaayen
F: hum ko dar hai ke teri baahon mein
hum khushi se na aaj mar jaaye

Teri zulfon se judaai to nahin maangi thi...

A romantic number from one of my old tapes. They don't make songs like these any more. 60's songs truly rock!

F: is hirso hawas ki duniyaa mein
armaan badalte dekhen hai
dhokhaa hai yahaan laalach hai yahaan
imaan badalte dekhe hai

Ch: waah waah... waah waah

F: daulat ke sunehre jaadoo se aye dil tadapnaa achhaa hai
chaandi ke khanakte sikko par insaan badalte dekhe hai...

M: (teri zulfon se judaai to nahin maangi thi
qaid maangi thi rihaai to nahin maangi thi) (2)

maine kyaa jurm kiyaa aap khafaa ho baithe (2)
pyaar maangaa thaa khudaai to nahin maangi thi
qaid maangi thi rihaai to nahin maangi thi

meraa haq thaa teri aankhon ki chhalakti may par (2)
cheez apni thi paraayi to nahin maangi thi
qaid maangi thi rihaai to nahin maangi thi

apne beemaar pe itnaa bhi sitam theek nahin (2)
teri ulfat mein buraai to nahin maangi thi
qaid maangi thi rihaai to nahin maangi thi

Dum Dum Diga Diga Mausam Bheega Bheega...

OMG! what a fun rain song... we've been having rains like these since last four days... and I know what "bin peeye main to gira" means when he sings in this one. :D Such a beautiful song with nice lyrics.

For some reason, this reminds me of "hansta hua noorani chehra". I think it's the music.

dum dum diga diga mausam bheega bheega (2)
bin peeye
main to giraa (3)
haaye allaah soorat aap ki subhaan allaah (2)

dum dum diga diga mausam bheega bheega
bin peeye main to giraa (3)
haaye allaah soorat aap ki subhaan allaah (2)

teri adaa waah waah kya baat hai
haaye teri adaa
teri adaa waah waah kya baat hai
ankhiyaan jhuki jhuki baaten ruki ruki (2)
dekho koyi to aaj lut gaya
haaye allaah soorat aap ki subhaan allaah (2)
dum dum diga diga mausam bheega bheega
bin peeye
main to giraa (3)
haaye allaah soorat aap ki subhaan allaah (2)

sanam hum maana gareeb hai
haaye sanam hum
eji sanam hum maana gareeb hai
naseeba khota sahi bandaa chhotaa sahi (2)
dil yeh khazaana hai pyaar ka
haaye allaah soorat aap ki subhaan allaah (2)
dum dum diga diga mausam bheega bheega
bin peeye
main to giraa (3)
haaye allaah soorat aap ki subhaan allaah (2)

Aye gham-e-dil kya karoon...

Today, I got my hands on my old tapes sitting around in my room and so it was time to listen to my favorite ones. This comes from the tapes I got as a gift from K-mami. God bless her! She chose such a quality gift to give me/us. These tapes have got fantastic collection of Talat Mahmood songs.

I adore this one for it's music. It's so upbeat and fantastic for a sad song. I wish I get to see the video of this song some day. Shammi Kapoor looks so young and handsome in the photo.

And while I was searching for who was the lyricist of this song, I found this awesome piece of info on this film, apparently one of Shammi Kapoor's first films and the lyricist Majaz.

Source: By swarapriya on hamaraforums

"Thokar" is the movie in which Shammi Kapoor made his debut. He was only 22 then. He did have acting experience touring with Prithvi Theatre Company (his father's) playing bit roles in various plays. By this time, both his father, Prithviraj Kapoor, and his older brother, Raj Kapoor, have firmly established themselves in the movie industry as formidable forces to reckon with. So when he decided to make a plunge into acting in movies, not just one, but five producers signed him.

Unfortunately for Shammi, eventhough he was in the hands of reputable directors, and was a leading man opposite several established actresses (like Madhubala, Nutan, and Suraiya) it wasn't an auspicious start for him. None of these movies were commercial successes.

One great feature about "Thokar" is its music composed by Sardar Malik. The songs "Aye Gham-E-Dil Kya Karoon" are outstanding. These were written by the famous poet Majaz (his picture is given below). In real life Majazji was Asraar Ul Haq. He was uncle of the great lyricist of today, Javed Akhtar. Javed Akhtar's father, himself another great lyricist, Jan Nisar Akhtar, was married to Majajz's sister.

Majazji was considered to be a romantic poet. He was regarded by many as Keats of India. Among others he was a contemporary of Sahir Ludhianvi. Eventhough Sahir initially didn't have good opinion of Majazji as a person (Majaz was an alocoholic), his poems won over him and they became very good friends until Majaz's death in 1955 at the young age of 44. For several years preceding his death, Majazji who depeneded on heavy drinking suffered several nervous breakdowns and also was institutionalized for some time. Inspite of all kinds of hardships, the genius in Majaz was still alive and stayed sober enough to write. His works were published in several books. One of his famous books is "Awaara". The song "Aye Gham-E-Dil" is one of the songs from that book.

Government of India honored Majaz's meomory by issuing a commemorative stamp recently in March 2008.

shaher ki raat aur main naashaad-o-naakaara phiroon
jag-magaati jaagati sadkon pe aawaara phiroon
(aye gham-e-dil kyaa karoon
aye vehshat-e-dil kyaa karoon
kyaa karoon, kyaa karoon) (2)
aye gham-e-dil kyaa karoon

yeh roopehli chhaanv yeh aakaash par taaron ka jaal (2)
jaise soofi ka tasavvur jaise aashiq ka khayaal
aah lekin kaun samajhe kaun jaane jee ka haal
aye gham-e-dil kyaa karoon
aye vehshat-e-dil kyaa karoon
kyaa karoon, kyaa karoon
aye gham-e-dil kyaa karoon

raaste mein ruk ke dam loon yeh meri aadat nahin (2)
laut kar vaapas chala jaaun meri fitarat nahin
aur koi hamanava mil jaaye yeh qismat nahin
aye gham-e-dil kyaa karoon
aye vehshat-e-dil kyaa karoon
kya karoon, kyaa karoon
aye gham-e-dil kyaa karoon

Kehna Hai Kehna Hai

Today, we were listening to some of these songs and I asked Papu about which is his favorite song of Kishore Kumar. This is the one he likes the most. I love the lyrics, the music and of course the voice. :)

kehna hai... kehna hai...

(kehna hai... kehna hai... aaj tum se yeh pehli baar
ho tum hi to laayi ho jeevan mein mere pyaar pyaar pyaar) (2)

tum se kehne waali aur bhi hai pyaari baaten (2)
saamne sab ke bolo kaise keh doon saari baaten
aaj magar bas itna hi karna hai iqraar
tum hi to laayi ho jeevan mein mere pyaar pyaar pyaar

kab se dil ne mere maan liya hai tum ko apna (2)
aankhen meri dekh rahi hai jaagte sote sapna
mere gale mein daal rahi ho tum baahon ka haar
tum hi to laayi ho jeevan mein mere pyaar pyaar pyaar

tum se kehne waali aur bhi hai pyaari baaten (2)
saamne sab ke bolo kaise keh doon saari baaten
aaj magar bas itna hi karna hai iqraar
tum hi to laayi ho jeevan mein mere pyaar pyaar pyaar

kehna hai... kehna hai... aaj tum se yeh pehli baar
ho tum hi to laayi ho jeevan mein mere pyaar pyaar pyaar
tum hi to laayi ho jeevan mein mere pyaar pyaar...

Aate Jaate Hanste Gaate...

When I get tired of watching all other movies, I watch Rajshri movies, specially one of Maine Pyaar Kiya, Hum Aap Ke Hai Kaun or Hum Saath Saath Hai. Last night while watching HAHK, I realized how beautifully they have picturized the title song. It reminded me of the title songs of James Bond movies, because these are the kinds of film that have a fantastic title song - in one way or the other. So then I decided to watch Maine Pyaar Kiya, yet another Rajshri favorite of mine that has a beautiful title song. I do like HAHK title song better than this, but it's such beautiful one I decided to put this one on here first. Enjoy!

M: I love you...
F: I love you...
Both: I love you...

M: aate jaate hanste gaate
socha tha maine man mein kayi baar
woh pehli nazar halka sa asar
karta hai kyon is dil ko beqaraar
ruk ke chalna chalke rukna
na jaane tumhen hai kis ka intezaar
tera woh yakeen kahin main to nahin
lagta hai yehi kyon mujhko baar baar
yehi sach hai shaayad maine pyaar kiya
haan haan tumse maine pyaar kiya

F: aate jaate hanste gaate
socha tha maine man mein kayi baar
hothon ki kali kuchh aur khili
yeh dil pe hua hai kis ka ikhtiyaar
tum kaun ho batla to do
kyon karne lagi main tum pe aitbaar
khaamosh rahoon ya main keh doon
ya kar loon main chupke se ye sweekaar
yehi sach hai shaayad maine pyaar kiya
haan haan tumse maine pyaar kiya .

(completely adore the violin playing through out the song)

Chali chali re patang meri chali re...

Today, while listening to Morning Masti, I got to listen to this song for the first time! And it truly made my day... such an upbeat song and the voices of two of my favorite singers. Then after I watched the video in the evening, I fell in love with it. It has Jagdeep and Nanda. Jagdeep looks so handsome and Nanda like a doll. Loved her hair-do with ribbons. Reminded me of my school days when we had to make our hair like that.

Fantastic music by Chitragupt and Rajinder Krishan's lyrics make it what it is, a hit song!

Happy Kiteflying Day!

M: chali chali re patang meri chali re (2)
chali baadalon ke paar ho ke dor pe sawaar
saari duniya yeh dekh dekh jali re
chali chali re patang meri chali re

M: yoon mast hawa mein lehraaye
jaise udan khatola uda jaaye
F: ho yoon mast hawa mein lehraaye
jaise udan khatola uda jaaye
le ke man mein umang jaise koyi dulhan
chali jaaye re sanwariya ki gali re

chali chali re patang meri chali re (2)
Both: chali baadalon ke paar ho ke dor pe sawaar
saari duniya ye dekh dekh jali re
chali chali re patang meri chali re

F: aa aa aa.. (4)
M: oh ho ho (2)

F: rang meri patang ka dhaani
hai yeh neele gagan ki raani
M :ho ho rang meri patang ka dhaani
hai yeh neel gagan ki raani
baanki baanki hai uthaan hai umar bhi jawaan
laage patli kamar badi bhali re

chali chali re patang meri chali re (2)
Both: chali baadalon ke paar ho ke dor pe sawaar
saari duniya ye dekh dekh jali re
chali chali re patang meri chali re

M: aa..aa..ha ha (4)
F: oh ho..ho..(2)

chhoona mat dekh akeli hai saath mein dor saheli (2)
M: hai ye bijli ki taar badi tez hai kataar
degi kaat ke rakh dil-jali re

Both: chali chali re patang meri chali re (2)
chali baadalon ke paar ho ke dor pe sawaar
saari duniya ye dekh dekh jali re
chali chali re patang meri chali re

Hum Jo Chalne Lage... Aao Milo Chale...

This is my second fav song of JWM after aaoge jab tum. I wish it had more stanzas so I'd get to hear more of Ustad Sultan Khan. It's a beautiful song by him and Shaan.

What I adore about some of these songs is how they fit into the story so wonderfully. Papu was explaining the other day how sometimes the songs are written earlier but then they could be written after the story is written too. I find it mind blowing how the lyricists come up with the (part of) story in the song for that particular scene(s).

SM: (hum jo chalne lage chalne lage hai yeh raaste
aa ha ha manzil se behtar lagne lage hai yeh raaste) (2)
aao kho jaaye hum ho jaaye hum yoon laapataa
aao meelon chale jaanaa kahaan na ho pataa

hum jo chalne lage chalne lage hai yeh raaste
aa ha ha manzil se behtar lagne lage hai yeh raaste

baithe baithe aise kaise koyi rastaa nayaa sa mile
tu bhi chale main bhi chalu honge kam yeh tabhi faasle
hmm.. baithe baithe aise kaise koyi rastaa nayaa sa mile
tu bhi chale main bhi chalu honge kam yeh tabhi faasle
aao tera mera na ho kisi se vaasta
aao meelon chale jaanaa kahaan na ho pataa

hum jo chalne lage chalne lage hai yeh raaste
aa ha ha manzil se behtar lagne lage hai yeh raaste

USK: ho ho... ho ho...
thaane kahi kahi main samjaau
ho thaane kahi kahi main samjaau
ke thaare bina jee na lage (2)

SM: aankhen khole neenden bole jaane kaisi jagi bekhudi
yahaan wahaan dekho kahaan le ke jaane lagi bekhudi
ho.. aankhen khole neenden bole jaane kaisi jagi bekhudi
yahaan wahaan dekho kahaan le ke jaane lagi bekhudi
aao mil jaayega hoga jahaan pe raasta
aao meelon chale jaanaa kahaan na ho pataa

hum jo chalne lage chalne lage hai yeh raaste
aa ha ha manzil se behtar lagne lage hai yeh raaste

USK: saajani...
saajani tumhe mat jaaniyo
preet kiye dukh hov
lagni lagaa na dekh (or is it seekh?) le
preet na kariyo ko...

Bollywood's Party/Mehfil Songs

Happy New Year 2010!

We start this year by partying... make that partying hard! :D

Here comes the list of the HFM's party/mehfil songs. They sing them in a mehfil full of people or a few people sitting around the singer. Sometimes you'd see them playing an instrument like sitar, guitar, harmonium, or drums and other times just standing, sitting or lost in thoughts. And that's what makes these songs thought provoking....

Many thanks to Java, for being an inspiration for this post.

Enjoy!
